Early Historical Highlights January 7, 1834- New Salem Baptist Church is constituted with a membership of eleven. August, 1853 - John A. Broadus, who later became the second president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is ordained at New Salem. 1853 - The church constructs its first house of worship which was destroyed by the Union Army during the Civil War.
